Good morning Bloggerville fans. Zebee here. I have some sad for me news. Today will be my last visit here at “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” blog. You might see me pop in around the web on other blogs, but this will be my last post here. I’ve had a lot of fun over these past two years talking with many of you, visiting with my boss Joy’s author friends and characters and going to zoos around the world. All good things come to an end, and this is it for us here at the V Zoo.

So, with all that said, let’s see what happened this week at the world zoos.

Best Christmas Story Ever!

Star: I say it's "The Night Before Christmas."

Billy: No it's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer."

Mori: My favorite is "Little Drummer Boy."

Zebee: What's all this arguing about? Can't you see we're live in Bloggerville. We don't wnat the folks out there thinking we fight. Tell me what the problem is.

Lito: We were talking about Christmas stories that our boss Joy and her friends have read to us. Everyone of us has a favorite and that's what we were fighting, uh, discussing. Which one is the best Christmas story ever.

Zebee: I see, well I vote for "Frosty The Snowman."

Lito: See, we all like different ones. I wonder which one our friends out there in Bloggerville like best? Maybe they can tell us. I say let's do a survey.

Billy: Yeah, I like that idea. Then all of you will see that "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" is the best ever.

The Lighting of the Tree at the V Zoo Party 2009

Good morning, Zebee here. Boy! Did we have a great tree lighting party! So many of my boss Joy’s author friends came it was amazing. Many of them brought along their characters too. Let’s see how many we can remember.

Elysabeth Eldering came. She brought along Matt, Guy and Mary Beth, her Junior Geography detectives. They were searching for clues for one of her books.

Lea Schizas was there. Bubba and Giganto were with her. They sure are nice boys and good soccer players. We had a game between the story characters and all of us here at the V Zoo. We lost, but we vowed to have a rematch next year and win. We need a coach. Any volunteers?

Oh, and Bill Kirk came and brought along Ari. We all watched were we stepped so we wouldn’t crush him. He’s really a cool spider.

When Vivian Zabel arrived with Buddy, some of the characters wanted him to teach them how to rope Prairie dogs. Since the closest thing we have to that here at the V Zoo are the meerkats, that just wouldn’t work. Instead he showed them how to rope a fence poll.

Che Dee was there with Odo, the time children, Mashu, Cassie and the Tulies.

Mary Jean Kelso brought along Andy and Spirit. Spirit is a beautiful horse and Andy is amazing the way he can ride.

Dayna Hilton and Sparkles came. Sparkles had us all on our knees again. This time even I could do it. I’ve been practicing.

Rachelle Burk was there with Kenny and Allison. We all wanted to hear about living in a tree house. I’d like to climb up in a tree house someday.

Rena Jones and Dilly came. So did Shari Lyle-Soffe along with Aaron and Horace. Mayra Calvani and Humberto read us some of Humberto’s favorite books. Hugo also showed up with Elizabeth Dulemba with soap for everyone.

I’m sure I forgot some of the authors and their characters. The place was packed and we had a fun time.

Who got to put the star on top of the tree this year? Billy. He climbed up Star’s neck and placed it, very carefully, on the top branch.
Got to go, I need to finish making my gifts. We are all making things for each other this year.

Book Review: The Christmas Angel by Mary Jean Kelso

Good morning book fans, Zebee and the gang here today. When our boss Joy read this story to us, we all wanted to go on our own adventure across the country. But more on that later. First let’s read what Joy has to say about the story.

* * * * * Melissa and her family were setting off on a great adventure to move from Philadelphia to Oregon. The trip would be long and hard. Each family member can bring one special possession along. Melissa’s most precious possession was a Christmas angel her father brought her from England. She packed it very carefully and hoped that it would make the trip unbroken.

Mary Jean has opened the trails of the Oregon Trail to the young reader this time. K.C. Snider’s art gives the reader a feel for what pioneers of the day went through.

At the end of the book there are several pages of information, websites and activities you can engage in to learn more about this part of American history.

* * * * * So, back to what I was saying, we all want to go on our own adventure across America. Here are a few of the places some of us want to visit:

Mori: I want to see the Sequoia National Forest in California. Those trees are amazing.

Lito: I’d like to visit the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest out in Arizona. I just think they’re cool.

Elvis: I want to take my family to see the Grand Tetons. There we could fly free, until we wanted to come home, of course.

Star: I want to visit the Empire State Building. Is it really taller than me?

Belinda: I want to visit my cousins over in Yosemite National Park. They say they get the best picnic foods. You know, my grandparents walked through our boss Joy’s campsite back when she was a little girl. But that’s a story for another time.

Getting Ready For This Year's Tree Lighting Ceremony

Good morning to you all. Zebee here. To get you in the mood for Christmas this year, this is a picture of the central plaza in Caguas, Puerto Rico last year. Is'nt that one of the prettiest trees you've ever seen?

Okay, as some of you might remember, last year at our tree lighting ceremony we had a few mishaps. Don't remember? You can read about it here. So, to avoid the same problems, my boss Joy has taken a few precautions.

To place the star on the top of the tree, this year we are drawing out of a hat. The paper that has a star on it will get the honors. Next will be a paper with a Christmas tree light on it. That animal will get to turn on the lights. This will avoid the two biggest problems from last year.

Who's on the guest list this year? All of our boss Joy's wiriter friends and a few of the characters from their books. I think it's going to be lots of fun. We've all heard the stories and m=now we're going to get to meet everybody.

It will be a big party this year. Do you want to come? Just drop me a comment and I'll put in a good word for your invitation to my boss Joy.

Book Review: My Grandmother's Kitchen Rules by Bill Kirk

Good Thursday everyone, Zebee here. When my boss Joy said that today's book was written by Bill Kirk, I got excited. I really like his book "There's a Spider in My Sink" that she read to us a while back. So, let's see what she has to say about this book of Bill's.

* * * * *

Today’s book is a cute rhyming story about a young girl and her grandmother. Grandma loves all the things in nature that her granddaughter brings home, with one exception. Ants! Read along as all kinds of creatures and discoveries are brought home. See what happens when ants are introduced and the problems they bring with them. Do they get rid of them, if so, how? I'm not telling, you have to read this wonderful story to find out!

The illustrations in this charming story capture your attention and bring the rhyme to life. Lots of color and fun borders on each page bring you into the story.

At the end of the story there are six pages of factoids, activities, games and a list of websites where you can go to learn more about ants.

Bill has once again combined a fun rhyming story with science.

I think the thing I learned that really surprised me was the fact that if you collected all the ants in the world (that would be 10 QUADRILLION!!!) they would weigh as much as all the people in the world! That's a lot of ants.

It's December 1st!!!

Good morning everyone! Zebee here. This is just a quick note today. See, my boss Joy has this tradition. December 1st is Christmas decorating day.

We here at the V Zoo all join in the fun. We will help decorate our enclosures. The giraffes will help string lights and garlands at the highest points, Billy and his mom are in charge of the popcorn and cranberry stringing, Elvis is in charge of adding the lights and I am going to somehow put the angel on top of the tree. Want to see her?

Isn't she pretty? My boss Joy made her years ago when Rebekha was a baby.

Anyway, then, after all the decorations are up, we help bake fudge, cookies and sing Christmas carols.

So, what do you do at your home to get ready for the holidays? I'd love to hear from you. Sharing family traditions is fun.

Zoo News Sunday: Christmas at the Zoo

Good chilly morning to all, Zebee here. My boss Joy says that Florida is cold, or at least colder than she remembered for this time of year. She's bundled up and, well, that's not why I'm here.

Book Review: Triangle Top, The Tale of a Troubled Tribe by Mark Johnson

Good Thursday morning to you all. Zebee here with another really great book. When my boss Joy read this one to us, we all thought back to when we had Mori’s surprise birthday party. Without all of us helping out, the party wouldn’t have happened. Anyway, let me get out of the way so Joy can tell you about “Triangle Top, The Tale of a Troubled Tribe.”

* * * * * Welcome to the world of the Trylicans. They live in a “tremendous triangular territory known as Triangle Top.” And so begins their adventure. All the Trylicans treasured the tasty treat called trumples and would do anything to get them. In order to get the tasty trumples, they had to work together, which they did beautifully. In their journey to find trumples, Travis the Twebble came across a problem. To get the trumples ahead, they would need to cross some very troubling terrain if they couldn’t turn everyone around. Were the Twebbles able to turn the rest of the tribe around? Did they find more trumples? You’ll find out when you pick up your copy of “Triangle Top, The Tale of a Troubled Tribe.”

Mark Johnson has used the letter “T” and cleverly woven a fun tale about cooperation. Without all parts working towards a common goal, the results might be disastrous. Add in the creative imagination of Christina Rodriguez and her incredible illustrations and you have a book children will truly enjoy. The lesson learned is one they will use throughout their lives.

Book Review: Humberto, the Bookworm Hamster by Mayra Calvani

Good morning book fans. Zebee and the whole gang here. It’s book review Thursday at the V Zoo, and you know what that means. Right! We have another great book to share with you today. Let’s get right to it. Here’s my boss Joy’s review.

* * * * *

Humberto loves to read. He read all the time no matter what he was doing. He could eat, brush his teeth, cook and go for a walk and read at the same time. He even listened to audio books while he slept.

The only time he couldn’t read was when he exercised on his wheel. Then he’d think about the books he’d read and become a part of the story.
Humberto was very busy reading. He had no time for his friends. He wanted to read all the good books ever written. His neighbors would invite him to play, but Humberto always had a book he had to read.

Then one day it rained. It rained so hard that the river overflowed and flooded all the animals’ homes. What happened to ‘Humberto’s books? What happened to all the animals’ homes? How did Humberto help his neighbors?

“Humberto, the Bookworm Hamster” sparks the imagination and natural curiosity of a child. Mayra has captured the essence of a true bookworm in Humberto. She’s given children an introduction into the wonderful world of books that can last a lifetime and the meaning of true friendship.

Kit Grady’s illustrations are charming. They pull you into Humberto’s world and show you the wonder of the many books he’s read as well as his animal friends.

* * * * * Okay, so there you have it. I couldn’t have said it better myself. How about a trip to your local library or bookstore now. What book are you going to pick up? Maybe I can ‘talk’ our boss Joy into taking all the animals here at the V Zoo on a field trip to the local library. Wouldn’t that be fun? I can just see it. Billy would be swinging from the lights . . .

Book Review: Soap, Soap, Soap by Elizabeth Dulemba

Good book review day Bloggerville fans! Zebee here with a really fun book for you. Here's my boss Joy with her take on the book.

Today is all about soap or jabón. Writer and illustrator Elizabeth Dulemba has written a fun filled bilingual story about Hugo, a young boy. His mamá sends him to the store to buy soap or jabón. Follow Hugo's adventure to the store and see who he meets along the way. Watch out, or you might end up needing a bath by the end of the story.

Elizabeth's illustrations are amazing. Her style really makes you feel like you are running right along side Hugo during his adventure. This is Elizabeth's first book that she both wrote the story and did the illustration. She has done a wonderful job weaving a cute story and illustrations together. All young children will enjoy this book.

Billy: What's a Cliché?

Lito: It's a saying that people use too much so it loses the meaning it originally had.

Mori: My favorite is "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

Billy: Oh, I get it. It's like "he's got ants in his pants" right?

Lito: That's a good one. Does your mom say that about you Billy when you start running all around your exhibit? I like "as easy as pie."

Billy: Ha, ha, ha.

Good morning everyone in Bloggerville. Zebee here. So, did you put your clocks back in you’re in the U.S.? Oh, did you have fun last night trick-or-treating? My boss Joy dressed up for work as “The Fairy godmother of the Sea Creatures.” Here’s a picture of the mask she made herself. Do you like it?

Book Review: Andy and Spirit in the Big Rescue by Mary Jean Kelso

It's Thursday her at the v Zoo, and that means it's book review time. Hello everyone, Zebee here. Let's see what my boss Joy is going to read to us today.

"Andy and Spirit in the Big Rescue" by Mary Jean Kelso

This week’s story is the third in the Andy and Sprit stories. Once again Andy and Spirit show what a great team they make.

We are back at the State Fair. It’s the day after Andy won the ‘Grand Champion’ ribbon in the 4-H riding competition. He and his mom have stayed over to see the rest of the fair and see how the other 4-H clubs do in their competitions.

Tracy, Spirit’s owner, has promised a ride around the tents to show Andy all the 4-H animals and the rest of the livestock that’s at the fair. When they arrive at the rodeo arena, Andy is watching a girl practicing barrel racing when suddenly one of the bulls breaks down the gate to his pen. The bull races after the girl and her horse then takes off out of the arena chasing Spirit, Andy and Tracy. When they reach the barn, the bull and Billy (the school bully) enter it at the same time. Will Billy be hurt? Will Spirit be hurt? See what happens and how Andy and Spirit save the day.

Mary Jean has once again done a wonderful job portraying the love between horse and boy. Her imagery brings you to the fair and makes you feel like you’re riding with Andy. K.C.’s illustrations show you all the action in this thrilling story.

Well, I don't know about you, but I really liked this book. Mary Jean sure has a way with all things horses.

Book Review: The Sound Snatcher by Linda Bryan Sabin

Good morning book fans. I have a cute, (but scary) book to share with you today.
My boss Joy read us this morning while the zookeepers were cleaning and getting ready to open for the day. Let’s see what she has to tell you about this story.

* * * * *

“The Sound Snatcher” is a cute rhyming story about a very special vacuum in Mark’s house. He’s curious about what this thing does. It cleans the floor like all vacuums do, but, it also eats up sounds. It eats the clock ticking sound, the phone ringing even the cat meowing and the dog barking! Is there any sound the sound snatcher doesn’t snatch?

The illustrations are great. They walk you through the adventures of this sound snatching machine. If you have a child who isn’t sure about what they think of your vacuum, this book just might be a good book to have. At the end of the story, there are several pages with questions and vocabulary words you can use with your little ones to learn more.

Can you imagine a zoo with no noise? We all decided that we like the story but don’t want the sound snatcher to visit us here at the V Zoo unless he’s not plugged in.

Muse Online Writers Conference Wrap Up

Good morning Bloggerville fans. Today, my boss Joy came by and shared some of what she learned at her writers conference. Boy, she sure had fun!

So, one of the things she did was look at a picture and describe every detail in it. We don't have pictures her at the V Zoo, but we can look around us. Here are some of our observations:

Mori: I live at the end of the zoo. But, on the other side of the fence is another world. When I look through the fence I see: trees, lots of trees, birds and bird nests in those trees. There's a stream that runs along the fence at the V Zoo. Sometimes I see fish jumping. I wonder what it would be like to swim like a fish...

Elvis: I look at the sky and dream. I dream about when I can fly free, like when I let everyone out of their exhibits for Mori's birthday party. I see my wife Elvira and baby Elvin, our nest and am glad I'm here.

Lito: I see leaves high up on tree branches. I ike to stand on my hind legs and eat those leaves.

Star: I look over at Zebee and wish I could travel the world zoos like him. Maybe one week he'll take me aong. I see my sisters Honey and Jewel. I think I'm the prettiest, but don't tell them I said that.

Belinda: I see our campsite that the keepers made for us. I love to explore it and see where they've hidden treats for Boris and me. One time they hid honey combs in a hole on the side of a tree, another time they put apples in a bag and hid them inside the tent. It's fun to sniff out food.

Okay, so there you have what a few of us here at the V Zoo see when we really look around. Now it's your turn. What do you see when you look outside your home? Please share, we love hearing from you.

Book Review: Andy and Spirit Go To The Fair by M.J. Kelso

Good morning all you book lovers. Zebee here with another in the Andy ans Spirit series. The gang here at the V Zoo really like these books. Maybe someday Andy and Spirit can come for a visit. But for now, let's see what my boss Joy has to say about this one.

In this week’s story, Andy has joined a 4-H club called the Dusty Riders. Andy and several other members of the club are competing at the State Fair for ribbons. He’s very excited about being at the fair, even though he doesn’t think he’s the best rider in the group.

When the time comes for the competition to start, Andy’s a bit nervous. He’s used to working Spirit with his friends around, but this is different. When it’s his turn, Billy, the school bully, yells out from the crowd and lets out a shrill pitched whistle. Will Spirit react and run off with Andy on her back? How does the competition end? I don’t want to spoil the story for you, so I’ll just say that Andy and Spirit prove what a great pair they are.

Mary Jean has once again done an excellent job sharing the experiences of horse and rider and the bond they form. She shows how having a handicap doesn’t have to keep you from doing the things you want to do. The illustrations by K. C. Snider let you see and experience being at the fair with Andy.

In this book you can also learn how wild horses are managed in the U. S. and horse adoption. You can also get some insight to 4-H clubs which have been around for over 100 years.

The Muse Online Writers Conference

Good morning book fans. Zebee here. This week my boss Joy is participating in her third Muse Online Writers Conference. She really has fun at these things.

People from all over the world get together online all week long. They meet in live chat rooms and workshops. This is really cool because you can pop in and out at your leisure. Well, not for the live chats, those you have to be there at a specific time.

So what do people do at the conference all week? The list of writer activities is nearly endless. Since my boss Joy likes to write for children, she attends workshops like our friend Margot Finke's titled "Write as tightas a granny's new girdle." Another favorite for her is put on by Devon Ellington. It's a dialogue workshop. She really has fun with the assignments in this one. There are ones about self publishing, web design, creating alternative worlds, writing romance novels and so much more I'll get writers cramp telling you about them.

Maybe next Tuesday she'll share some of what she did this week. Okay, here she comes and I have to get off her computer. See you Thursday for another great book for you to check out.

Book Review: Mommy, Draw Stars on My Tummy by Martine Groeneveld

Good morning book fans, Zebee here. our book today is for the younger children in the audience. This was a book that Bindi and Elvira really liked because of their toddlers. So, let’s see what my boss Joy has to say about “Mommy, Draw Stars on My Tummy.”

Nurturing our children when they are infants, toddlers and beyond is a vital part of parenting. This book is a tool for parents to use at home to instill love and affection through use of touch-play, rhymes, games, songs and stories.

“Positive touch plays a major role in my family. Besides daily hugs and kisses, many activities
are easily combined with loving and playful touch. We enjoy touch-play activities in the car, in line at the grocery store and before bedtime. They can be done anywhere and anytime.”

The layout is wonderful. In each section you are given guidance on how to use touch-play and tips to involve your child in the process. For example:

Martine starts the book with an introduction to touch-play and how to use it with your child, She continues with notes for parents about types of oils to use, pressure and stroking, clothing and timing. At the end of the book she goes into the benefits of touch and research that’s been done on brain development and how it helps reduce aggression. She also gives you a list of resources and books that can further your knowledge.

Reading through this book brought back memories of when my children were very young. I was involved in a “mommy and me” that used these same types of touch-play in a group setting. When we’d go home, we’d continue the experience and make up new songs and rhymes. This would be a great gift for anyone that’s going to have a child.

You know, when she read it to all the animals at the V Zoo we all wished our moms had a book like this when we were young. Joy told us she’s keeping it in our library and that if any of us want to use it we can. Elvira checked it out right away. Little Elvin is the perfect age for a book like this. It should be interesting to see a momma king vulture using touch-play with her chick. I bet stroking with her wing feathers will tickle.

When I was a child, my favorite book was... because....

Good morning everyone, Zebee and the gang here today. We, rather our boss Joy, decided to participate in the “Great Books Blog Tour” this week.

Each day has a different topic of discussion about books. Today’s is “When I was a child, my favorite book was... because....” Several of the animals at the V Zoo wanted to share, so here they are.

Mori the okapi: That’s easy. My favorite is “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” because it’s about all of us celebrating my birthday.

Lito the gerenuk: I like “Rainbow Sheep” by Kim Chatel. I think that girl Genevieve is pretty cool.

Elvis the king vulture: I like the stories my mother used to tell me about visiting with the Mayan gods. You know, in ancient times we were the messengers to the gods. Maybe some of us still are…Of the stories our boss Joy has read my favorite one was “There’s a Spider in My Sink!” by Bill Kirk. I liked all the factoids he had in the book. I learned a lot about spiders.

Honey the giraffe: I like “Little Man in the Map” by E. Andrew Martonyi. I learned a lot about the USA and the pictures were great.

Star the giraffe: “Maybe We Are Flamingos” by Sue Thurman. I just thought the babies were cute.

Boris the bear: I like Shari Lyle-Soffe’s book “Nothing Stops Noah.” I like the way he got all the animals back in their cages.

Ringo the bongo: Mine are the ones by Donna Shepherd about Topsy Turvy Land. I really like Dotty.

Fred the peacock: I like Margot Finke’s book, “Rattlesnake Jam.” She’s so funny.

Jabari the leopard: Mine is Lea Schizas book, “Bubba and Giganto.” I can identify with Bubba.

Okay, so there you have them. As for mine, well, there are just so many books to choose from, but I’d have to say “Frankie the Walk and Roll Dog” by Barbara Techel. That Frankie sure has spunk.

Book Review: Andy and the Albino Horse by Mary Jean Kelso

Hi book fans! Zebee here with the first in a series of books about Andy and a horse named Spirit. I like horses, don't you? Did you know they are like a distant relative of mine? Heck, add stripes and they could sorta pass for a zebra. Anyway, Mary Jean and my boss Joy got together and decided to read these books to us here at the V Zoo. Here's the review from the first in the series, "Andy and the Albino Horse."

This story is one of struggle and triumph. Andy is a young boy who spends his days in a wheelchair. He feels different that all the other children in school and is the school bullies favorite target. Andy wishes he could stand up and walk, then maybe Billy the bully would leave him alone.

In another part of town there is a lady named Tracy. She’s a horse trainer. During a severe winter she encounters an albino filly who’s been shunned by the rest of her herd because she’s different. Eventually the Bureau of Land Management puts the filly up for adoption and Tracy adopts her. She trains the filly, named Sprit, and Andy’s mom brings him out one day to ride her.

I won’t give away the ending, but this story teaches us that even though someone is different they still have feelings and dreams like everyone else.

Book Review: A Horse of Course by Shari Lyle-Soffe

Good Thursday to all you book fans. Zebee here. Today’s story made all of us here at the V Zoo laugh when our boss Joy read it to us. It made us think what it would be like to live . . . Let’s see what Joy’s review says about the story.

* * * * *
“A Horse of Course” is a fun romp through a child’s imagination of what it would be like to have a horse for a pet. It’s Aaron’s birthday and Grandpa Roy gives him a horse for a present. Aaron is very happy and decides to name him Horace. When asked where Horace will live, Aaron says “With me of course,” and so begins a wild and often messy adventure.

Shari has brought to life what it would be like to have a horse live with you as if they were a cat, dog or another child. The hilarious turn of events is sure to have any child laughing. Eugene Ruble’s illustrations are whimsical and give Horace his loveable personality.

Book Review: A New Job for Dilly by Rena Jones

Good morning Bloggerville fans. Zebee here and today I have a really fun book to share with you. When our boss Joy read this one to us, we all started thinking about what kinds of jobs we could do.

Okay, so here's what she has to say:

Dilly is a rat. A rat who loves sour pickles. They are his most favorite food in the whole world. He picks one up off the floor of a deli and gets chased by a man who calls him a theif. Dilly is tired of being chased and called a thief so he decides to get a job.

Dilly searches and finds jobs that take him trough the alphabet. He tries being a clown, a housekeeper, and optician and every other letter of the alphabet. Will Dilly find his perfect job? You'll need to read the story to find out.

Lisa Oakman's illustrations are lively and cute. You feel like you're right there with Dilly at every job he tries. Together Rena and Lisa have created a story that will delight children of all ages.

We here at the V Zoo came up with jobs we could do. Here's our list:

Zebee: I think I'll keep the jobs I have as Mascot and roving reporter.

Mori: I could be an Ear Nose and Throat doctor.

Star: I can be a movie star and travel the world acting.

Billy: I want to be an acrobat.

Lenny: I will be a hunter and hunt at night.

New Happenings at the V Zoo

Ringo (bongo): Paul, come look at this! What do you think they’re doing back there?

Paul (bongo): I’m not sure. Hey, Adam, can you see what Rebekha, Sally and Joy are doing?

Adam (kudu): Looks like they’re setting up a picnic.

Paul: Why?

Zebee: Hi guys! What’s up? Oh, hi everyone in Bloggerville. Didn’t see you there. So, Ringo, what are you looking at?

Ringo: Our boss Joy, Rebekha and Sally are over there behind the elephant exhibit and we’re trying to figure out what they’re doing.

Zebee: Oh, is that all? They’re …

Billy (chimp): I know, I know! They’re going to make me a new playground. Right?

Zebee: Well, you’re part right. They are planning a new playground, but it’s not for you Billy. Sorry.

Billy: Aw gee, I was hoping…

Ringo: So who is the new playground for Zebee?

Zebee: It’s for the families that come to visit the V Zoo. It’s going to have picnic tables, BBQ pits, a jungle gym, swing set, wading pool, gazebo and lots more.

Adam: Sounds like it’s going to be a fun place for them to spend part of their day at the zoo.

Paul: I’m glad we will have front row seats when it’s open. I like to watch humans, don’t you Adam?

Adam: I like watching the kids. They do some of the funniest things. So, Zebee, when is this playground going to be done?

Zebee: Around the end of the year sometime. I think our boss Joy is planning a special party with some of her cyber buddies like Margot, Donna and Shari.

Billy: Oh goodie! I really like Margot, Donna and Shari. Are they going to bring all their books and have a story party?

Zebee: That’s part of the plan. Oops, I’ve got to go. There’s this special event going on over at, well I”ll tell you more about it on Sunday. Bye for now everyone!

Book Review: Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog by Dayna Hilton

Good morning book fans, Zebee here. Today we have a book all about fire safety.

Yesterday, my boss Joy’s friend Dayna Hilton and her dog Sparkles came for a visit. Dayna is a fire safety instructor and along with her dog Sparkles she teaches children what to do in case of a fire. She’s also written a book about it. Here’s what my boss Joy has to say about the book:

"Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog" by Dayna Hilton teaches children all about fire safety. Dayna is a firefighter and currently serves as a Public Fire and Life Safety educator in Clarksville, Arkansas.
With the help of her father and son who are also firefighters, she developed a complete package of fire safety information that's sure to delight children as it teaches.

Her book walks you trough a day in the life of Sparkles as she helps Dayna teach children fire safety. The photographs in the book show Dayna, her son Michael and Sparkles get ready for the day and how they help children learn what to do in case of a fire.

For little ones who can’t read yet, Dayna has an audio CD available where the story is read with and without page turning prompts. Included on the CD is a song about Sparkles.

If you go to Sparkles website, you will find activity sheets, games and much more. Sparkles even has a fan club your children can join.

Dayna and our boss Joy read the book to all of us here at the V Zoo. When they were finished it was Sparkles’ turn to teach us how to “stay low and go.” You should have seem us! Star and the other giraffes couldn’t…

Star: I heard what you said Zebee. What we want to know is if you plan on telling all the children in Bloggerville how funny you looked trying to crawl low. All I can say is that I’m glad I wasn’t behind you for that part of the program!

Z: Okay Star you made your point. I’m sorry that I was going to make fun of how you looked while you tried to crawl low. I guess there were quite a few of us that looked silly since we just can’t bend that way. The big cats, bears and chimps didn’t have any trouble, just us hoof stock.

Star: I guess if the V Zoo ever had a fire, we’d just get down as low as we can and crawl out as fast as we can.

Z: I know that’s what I’d do. Now, back to Dayna and her mission. She told us that to help get her message out, she’s been on the "PBS KIDS Sprouts" as well as "Fox and Friends." I think that’s cool. I know your visit here with us taught us a lot about fire safety.

Final Wrap Up for 'Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp"

Good morning campers! Well, today is the official end of 'Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp.' We here at the V Zoo hope you had as much fun as we did.

This week a bunch of campers sent in art work. Here are their pictures.

Book Review: Tree House in a Storm by Rachelle Burk

Good morning Bloggerville reading fans. Zebee here.

We are right in the middle of hurricane season! Remember last year when our boss Joy was going through storm after storm in Puerto Rico? I sure do!

Today's book is about hurricane Betsy and her visit to New Orleans back in 1965. Joy's friend, Rachelle Burk wrote this story and she read it to us this morning. I'm glad we live in the 'V Zoo' and don't have to worry about hurricanes!

Here's Joy's review:

Kenny and his sister Allison are growing up in New Orleans back in the 1960’s. Their favorite way to spend the day is up in their tree house they built together. Then along comes hurricane Betsy and not only destroys people’s homes, but also takes down the mighty oak tree where their tree house is. But keep reading because there is a happy ending.
This story not only teaches about how to deal with loss but also how to rebuild. Rachelle’s personal experience of living through a devastating hurricane is felt through the lives of her characters Kenny and Allison. She shows you what life is like, before and after the storm.

Rex Schneider did a wonderful job illustrating this story. His illustrations give you the feel of the 60’s and show how magnificent a child’s imagination can be.

Rachelle has all kids of fun things for you to do over at her site, Tree House in a Storm. She has coloring pages, puzzles, word games and more. Have fun!

Slithery Snakes Week Update

Ssss...Good morning cmapers, Zebee here. This past week over at the zoo camp was all about snakes. A couple of our campers sent in some pictures to share with the whole group.

We here at the V Zoo love it when you send us pictures. Here are the ones we got this week.

First we have Beth's chain snakes. Look, she made a mommy and
baby. How cute and creative. Thanks Beth.

Book Review: Moving Through All Seven Days by Kathy Stemke

Good Thursday to you all. Zebee here.

Today's book is lots of fun. The gang here at the V Zoo really had fun with this book. We were jumping, dancing and singing (if you can imagine that!) through the whole book.

Here's what my boss Joy has to say about it:

Kathy will have you up out of your chair and moving as you read her book. Each day of the week has different moves from slipping, sliding and spinning on Sunday to wiggling, wobbling and whirling on Wednesday. She has lots of fun active words to take you through the week.

Illustrator Tony Glisson’s drawings are full of children having fun acting out Kathy’s words. I liked his illustrations for Kathy’s song near the end of the book.

Kathy added more fun at the back of the book with games and several pages with fun language arts activities, coloring pages with writing skills added two them and cool word puzzles.

This is a great book to help parents and teachers alike teach the days of the week in a very fun way.

Zoo Camp Penguin Week Update

Good morning campers, Zebee here. This week was all about penguins. I like penguins, don't you?

We had art work sent in from three campers this week. Let's get right to it.

Book Review: the Four Little Pigs by Jeanette Ramnarine

Good morning! Zebee here. This week I have a really cool book. It's all about learning how to save and spend money. Here's my boss Joy's review of "The 4 Little Pigs."

Jeanette has done a great job helping us teach our children about the use of money.

Welcome to "The 4 Little Pigs." It's Caleb's third birthday and his parents want him to learn how to save and spend money.

One of his presents is a box of 4 little piggy banks. They are named schooling, saving, spending and sharing.

See how Caleb learns what to do with his money and how he decides to spend it.

Jeanette has created an easy to read and understand book about finances that all young children can understand. She shows ways to teach your young ones how to handle their allowances.

Franfou's illustrations fit perfectly. You feel like you are Caleb and are making the decisions right along with him.

Jeanette not only has the book "The 4 Little Pigs" she also has 4 piggy banks for you to use, just like in the story.

This book is a great way to teach your children how to start using money wisely.

All of the animals here at the V Zoo thought it would be fun to get an allowance. We don't need one, but if we did, here is what some of us would do with it:

Billy: "I'd buy candy, lots of candy."

Bindi: "No you wouldn't."

Billy: "Gee mom."

Elvis: "I'd save it for a nice new home for my family."

Elvira: "Thank you Elvis. That's very thoughtful of you."

Star: "I'd go to a beauty spa. I've always wanted to have a massage."

Honey: "That sounds wonderful. I think I'd do the same thing."

Lito: "I'd travel. You know, like you do Zebee. I want to see all those other zoos and things."

Zebee: "I'll see if our boss Joy will let me take you along some time."

Lito: "Thanks Zebee."

Book Review: The Wuffle by Wave Walton

Good morning book fans. Today my boss Joy has a book to share with you that is . . .

Well, I'll l et her tell you about it.

Today’s book takes you on a journey into the world of a wuffle. What’s a wuffle? In the words of the story “Now, the Wuffle is hard to describe. It’s sort of a small, but fat, and round little creature with little, scrawny legs almost like those of a frog. He’s real fuzzy with big, beady eyes. He is quite funny looking really.”
Because the wuffle thinks he’s funny looking, he hides from the animals in the forest when he goes out for a drink down at the river. Until one day when one of the animals discovers him…

Wave Walton has created a story that children can relate to when they feel like they’re different and have no friends. This book let’s us see how unique each one of us is and how that’s a good thing. Ian Crittenden’s illustrations help you feel just what the wuffle is feeling.

When she read this to the V Zoo gang, we wondered if the Wuffel would ever come visit us. We're real curious about him. She said she'd see what she could do.

Wave has had the book translated into Chinese and published an English / simplified Chinese version. Over at his website, he has his book either available or soon to be available in Russian and Hindi with more to come.
In the future, Wave plans on having coloring pages and more to go along with his book, “The Wuffle.” Maybe when he writes another story about the Wuffle they both will come for a visit.

Zoo Camp Art from Frog Week

Good morning campers! Zebee here.

We had a really fun week at camp last week with all those facinating frogs, didn't we? A few of you sent in some art and we here at the V Zoo thank you very much. We like to see what you are doing at camp.

Book Review: The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett

Good morning book review fans, Zebee here. Today I'm going to share a book with all of you that my boss Joy just finished reading to us. It's called "The Three SnowBears."

Do you know the story of Goldilocks? This is Goldilocks with a twist. This story takes place in Alaska with a little girl named Aloo-ki. She's an Inuit eskimo. She's out fishing with her sled dogs one day when the dogs drift away from her on a piece of the ice that's melting. On her hunt for them, she comes across an igloo and can't resist going inside to check it out. I'm not going to tell you any more, you'll have to read it for yourself.

The artwork in Jan's books is always beautiful. She illustrates the story, but on the sides of the main illustratoins she has other pictures of things that are going on as well. Like in this book, the main pictures show you what A;oo-ki is doing and the side pictures show you what the bears and sled dogs are doing. I really like that. There's so much to see on each page.

Our polar bears Cindy and Clide, really liked the book. Cindy wants a coat like mama snow bear's.

Zoo Camp Update

Good morning fellow campers and everyone else, Zebee here.

Last week over at camp we learned about vultures. Here are pictures from some of our campers.

Book Review: My Twins are Coming Home by Paris Morris

Good morning all! Zebee here with another great book to review. Do you remember a while back we looked at Paris’s first book, “I’m Having Twins!” We are back now with the second in her series and it’s just as cute.

“My Twins are Coming Home” picks up where “I’m Having Twins” left off. The day has arrived and Paris’s mom has her new baby sisters. Paris is so excited about becoming a big sister. Read how she spends her time waiting for her new baby sisters to come home and what she finally can share with them.

Again, the illustrations are very kid friendly. This is another great book in this series that big brothers and sisters will enjoy reading over and over again.

What's Happening at Zoo Camp?

Happy Tuesday! Zebee here. Our zoo camp is into it's third week now. Let's see what our campers are sending in to share with everyone.

First up is Wyatt and his picture of a lizard. Wyatt is 3 and a half and his mom says he asks for zoo camp every day.

Wyatt also sent in a picture of his bubble wrap lizards. This is what he said:

Hi Zebee,Here is a picture of the bubble wrap lizards I made with my mom. She,put glue where the eyes go and I pasted google eyes on them. Thank you, Wyatt

Here's Anne's foam lizard art. She gave her pink wiggle eyes.

Okay, now for our 8 sentence stories. We have two. The first one is from Jimmy.

Iguana, iguana, I want to play with iguana.

Iguana is green and scaly.

I like to watch and chase iguanas.

Want to have an iguana for a pet.

To feed an iguana I give him lettuce.

Play on the piano and make up a song.

With my dad I made my iguana a cage.

Iguana likes his new home.

Next is a story by Becky.

The chameleon looked both ways before she leaped.

Chameleon landed on a branch.

Looked over at the spider web.

Both the spider and the chameleon blinked.

Ways to eat a spider.

Before the chameleon ate the spider she watched.

She got the spider on the first try.

Leaped off the branch and walked away.

Book Review: My Friends at the Zoo by Richard Paniello

Good Thursday to you, Zebee here. I have a book about a zoo for you today. Here's what my boss Joy had to say about it.

"My Friends at the Zoo" is an adorable story about a little girl’s day at the zoo. Her romp with the animals is sure to grab any child’s imagination. She makes the peacock a fancy hat, swims with the otters and skips rope with the elephants. Her adventures continue all day long with many more animals in the zoo.

Richard Paniello really has a way with rhyming in a very vivid way. Along with Vicky Knoll’s illustrations you are that little girl enjoying yourself at the zoo.

Reading “My Friends at the Zoo” will make you put on your sneakers and head for your local zoo.

Now it's my turn. I liked this book a lot. I wish that children could come into our exhibits and play with us like she dreams about in this story. I'd love to jump and run with them. Oh well, I guess that's not possible. We are wild animals and I guess that wouldn't be a very good idea.

Book Review: Tootsie the Nibble Hunter by Wave

Good day to you all out there in Bloggerville. Zebee and the whole gang here. I, uh, we have a book to share with you today that is about something we all like to do. Nibble. When our boss Joy read this one, we left thinking of all the nibbles we like best.
But first, let’s hear what Joy has to say.

While the kind old man that takes care of Tootise feeds her, she longs for tastier treats. When he takes his afternoon naps, Tootise sneaks out and searches around town for tasty tidbits. Go along with Tootsie and see just what good tasting treats she finds.

The illustrations are perfectly suited for the story. As Tootise goes on her hunt for treats, you are right along side her as you look at them.

Tootsie the Nibble Hunter is a cute read aloud story for young children. But watch out, you might want to go nibble hunting too.

Okay, that’s what our boss Joy had to say, now here are some of the gang at the V Zoos ideas of tasty treats.

Star the giraffe: I just love browse, especially when it’s high up in the trees. I can show off my long beautiful neck.

Molhi the lion: Give me a big hunk of raw meat any day!

Boris the bear: Someone else’s picnic, now that’s a treat!

Billy the chimp: Bananas are great, but I like them better when the keepers hide them around our exhibit and I have to hunt for them. That’s when they stick raisins in them. Yummy!

Elvis the king vulture: Those little tidbits of raw meat that get scattered around our enclosure. They are really good.

Mori: I like carrots. They are so nice and sweet.

Okay, as you can see, everyone has his or her favorite nibbles. What’s yours? Let us know and I promise we’ll share them here with everyone.

Book Review: N is for Nature by Tim Magner

Good Thursday all, Zebee here. Wow! It’s July already! My, uh, our summer camp starts next week. Did you sign up yet? We have some really cool prizes to give away, so be sure you hop over to our zoo camp page to sign up.
Anyway, where was I. Oh yeah, today’s book review day. Isn’t the cover of this book pretty? If you like it, you’ll love the illustrations inside.

Let’s see what some of our friends here at the V Zoo had to say about this book.

Mori: I think it’s cool. But why isn’t “O” for okapi?

Lito: I like the way Tim Magner made learning about nature fun. Like, I didn’t know pandas didn’t growl like a bear. I learned about yaks too.

Honey: I wonder if there were dinosaurs taller than us? What do you think? Anyway, I think the book is a great way to get children interested in learning about nature.

Zamba: I think icebergs are cool. I had no idea they were so big.

Bindi: I agree with Honey. I am going to borrow the book to teach Billy about nature. Maybe it will help calm him down a little.

Z: I know! I heard Rebekha and our boss Joy talking about it yesterday. Well, I’ve got to go, it’s blog time. Bye Elvis.

E: Bye Zebee. I see if I can fly around tonight and see what the rest of the gang’s been hearing.

Okay, hi there everyone. Zebee here. I’ve been visiting with Elvis and we were discussing the zoo camp plans. Boy have Joy and Rebekha along with the rest of the keepers got a great time planned for all of you. If you promise not to tell, I’ll share a secret with you. Promise?

I’ll give you a hint. They are planning an art project that each week you’ll add to it. By the end of the eight weeks, you’ll have a really cool . . .

Star: Don’t you dare Zebee! Don’t you know that Rebekha and the keepers are working really hard on that art project and you’re going to give it all away? Everyone will find out next week on Monday when week one goes live. I think they can wait, don’t you?

Z: I guess you’re right. Sorry.

Good Sunday morning everyone out there in Bloggerville, Zebee here. This week I’ve traveled all over the world visiting zoos and have brought back information on lots of things that are going on at the zoos. Summer is a fun time at the zoo. Let's see what's going on out there.

Public gets first look at Akron Zoo's jaguar cubs
These cubs are really cute. The zoo had a clever naming contest that doubled as a fund raiser. Read about it here.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo Clocks its one millionth visitor
Congratulations! When I went to this zoo, I was really impressed. Check out their web site and you’ll see what I mean. Cool!

Mysore zoo to have a few exotic species soon
This zoo is 100 years old and going strong. They have been working hard recently to bring even more exotic species into the zoo. See what’s new at this zoo.

Book Review: Odo and the Time Children by Che Dee

Good day to you. Zebee here. My boss Joy just finished reading a story to us here at the V Zoo about England years ago and a time traveling. See, there’s this cat, well, why don’t I let Joy tell you about it.

Odo and the Time Children is an imaginative story about Odo, a talking time traveling cat, Meadowsweet and her brother Turnip. The children find themselves with a big problem on their hands, when Odo appears. A talking cat isn’t something you can ignore, and when he offers to help the children find the lost golden coin, they can’t say no. Little did the children know that this would involve traveling through time and running into some not very nice people.

Che Dee has woven a delightful tale that makes it hard to put the book down. Her imagination draws you in and keeps you until the last page. Set in Saxon times, modern times and several times in between, you get a sense of what it would be like to travel into the future where everything was strange and wonderful at the same time.

This book is great for children around nine and up. Odo and the Time Children will spark their imaginations and they will learn a little about Saxon England at the same time.

I guess the only thing I didn’t like about the book is that she didn’t have me in it. After all, I can talk and the children could have ridden on my back. Oh well, I can’t be in every book.

Book Review: The Little Man in the Map by E. Andrew Martonyi

Good day all, Zebee here. Today’s book will make you think. You will learn all about the 50 states, where they are in the country and lots more. I looked all over this book and learned all kinds of things. Let’s look at the book trailer.

My boss Joy really likes this book. Here’s what she has to say about it.

“The Little Man in the Map” is a clever rhyming story. Meet MIM, the Man in the Map. Have fun with him as he walks you through all 50 states with simple ways to remember where they are in relation to each other.

Ed Olson did a superb job illustrating the map of the United States. With his artwork and Andrew’s rhymes you can’t help but learn US geography.

This is a wonderful book for schools and homes to have on their bookshelves. Children and adults alike will learn something new from “The Little Man in the Map.”
When my boss Joy read this book to all of us here at the V Zoo, we loved the pictures. I think all of you will too.

Good morning Bloggerville fans. Zebee here. We have officially started to sign people up for our zoo camp. I’m real excited because this means all of us here at the V Zoo will get to meet all of you.

There have been a few changes, and my boss Joy and her daughter Rebekha are hard at work with all the other zookeepers getting everything ready for you. Here’s the weekly line up:

Book Review: Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure by L.S. Cauldwell

Hello all, Zebee here. Today is book review day and we have a great book to share. How many of you like mysteries? How about historical fiction? Today’s book has both.

This is a book for ages 9-12, so it’s for an older crowd than most of the books I bring to you. My boss Joy shared it with us and I thought you’re big brothers and sisters would like this. (Maybe they’ll let you play with them next time their friends are over because you shared it with them.)

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure

Anna Mae, her brother Malcolm and her best friend Raul are on their way to school after what seemed like a very short summer. Strange things start happening; a ginger root that appears to be alive, a floating black fist and alphabet soup are a few of the pieces of the mystery Anna Mae has been chosen to solve. But how can a 7th grader solve the mystery of the Jefferson Davis gold theft that’s stumped adults since 1865? What does the gift she inherited from her grandmother have to do with it? Follow along on this challenging mystery and learn a bit about American history at the same time.

L. S. Cauldwell has done a superb job bringing together history and exciting fiction. She’s done her research and walks you through what happened to the Jefferson Davis gold that mysteriously disappeared while being transported through Lincoln County. She has added a bibliography and questions that help all who read her book learn more about that time in history.

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure is a good book for either summer reading or to supplement classroom studies about the Civil War and Jefferson Davis.

Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp!

Hi everyone, Zebee here. Don't you just love the logo for our (my) summer camp? Personally I think it's a great likeness of me. Anyway, I over heard Rebekha and my boss Joy talking about the summer camp and thought I'd share.

Each week a different animal that we have here at the V Zoo will be highlighted. There will be:
* games
* trivia
* crafts
* and more

We also are going to have some prizes. How can you win?
*One way is through comments. Each comment counts as one chance to win. Post a comment each week and that gives you 8 chances.
*Another way, share this blog with your friends. When they sign up for our FREE virtual summer camp and list you as the person who shared it with them, that's another chance to win. Get all your friends to join you and have even more fun with me and the rest of the gang.
