When I was a child, my favorite book was... because....

Good morning everyone, Zebee and the gang here today. We, rather our boss Joy, decided to participate in the “Great Books Blog Tour” this week.

Each day has a different topic of discussion about books. Today’s is “When I was a child, my favorite book was... because....” Several of the animals at the V Zoo wanted to share, so here they are.

Mori the okapi: That’s easy. My favorite is “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” because it’s about all of us celebrating my birthday.

Lito the gerenuk: I like “Rainbow Sheep” by Kim Chatel. I think that girl Genevieve is pretty cool.

Elvis the king vulture: I like the stories my mother used to tell me about visiting with the Mayan gods. You know, in ancient times we were the messengers to the gods. Maybe some of us still are…Of the stories our boss Joy has read my favorite one was “There’s a Spider in My Sink!” by Bill Kirk. I liked all the factoids he had in the book. I learned a lot about spiders.

Honey the giraffe: I like “Little Man in the Map” by E. Andrew Martonyi. I learned a lot about the USA and the pictures were great.

Star the giraffe: “Maybe We Are Flamingos” by Sue Thurman. I just thought the babies were cute.

Boris the bear: I like Shari Lyle-Soffe’s book “Nothing Stops Noah.” I like the way he got all the animals back in their cages.

Ringo the bongo: Mine are the ones by Donna Shepherd about Topsy Turvy Land. I really like Dotty.

Fred the peacock: I like Margot Finke’s book, “Rattlesnake Jam.” She’s so funny.

Jabari the leopard: Mine is Lea Schizas book, “Bubba and Giganto.” I can identify with Bubba.

Okay, so there you have them. As for mine, well, there are just so many books to choose from, but I’d have to say “Frankie the Walk and Roll Dog” by Barbara Techel. That Frankie sure has spunk.

Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp!

Hi everyone, Zebee here. Don't you just love the logo for our (my) summer camp? Personally I think it's a great likeness of me. Anyway, I over heard Rebekha and my boss Joy talking about the summer camp and thought I'd share.

Each week a different animal that we have here at the V Zoo will be highlighted. There will be:

* and more

We also are going to have some prizes. How can you win?

Happy Birthday - Yummy, cake!

Good day everyone, Zebee here.

Are you a cake lover? A birthday cake lover?

You know, we animals like our treats too. Take Mori for example. He loves carrots. Do you like carrots?

When it was time to make his birthday cake, Lito, Elvis and I put our heads together to try and figure out what kind of cake we could make that everyone could eat. We came up with carrot cake.

Most of us here at the ‘V Zoo’ can and do eat carrots. We eat so many that my boss Joy brings them in by the truck load. Yes, we love our carrots.

‘V Zoo’ happenings: Summer Camp

Good morning everyone in Bloggerville. Zebee here with some exciting news! My boss Joy, Rebekha and Sally are thinking about having a summer camp here! Think about that. A summer camp at the ‘V Zoo.’ Mori, Lito, Elvis and the rest of the gang here are all talking about it.

Oh look! Here come Rebekha and Sally. Let’s listen in and see if they talk about some of the plans. See you at the end.

R: I think a summer camp will be lots of fun, don’t you Sally?

S: Yes, I went to one when I was younger and had a blast.

R: What types of things did you do?

S: Well, when I was 6 we did things like look at bugs and learned all about them. We even got to hold some of them, the non poisonous ones. We did lots of crafts, all animals related. My mom still has some of them I think.

R: Sounds like fun. I think my mom is planning one day and week long camps for different age groups.

S: That’s what I heard. I know each group will have some type of encounter with our educational animals. They also will get some ‘behind the scenes tour’ and get to help fix diets and learn how we feed each of the animals. Of course there will be lots of crafts.

R: Let’s go over to mom’s office and see what she has in mind for us to do during summer camp.

S: I bet Jim will get to take the older kids to the . . .

Hi everyone in Bloggerville. A few weeks ago we showed you some slides of when “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” was printed. Well, today we have a short video of the printing. The noise in the print shop is very loud, so my boss Joy muted the video and made it like a silent movie, sort of.

Did you learn something? I sure did. I thought books were easy and could be finished in a day. I had no idea that the ink on the pages had to dry for two days and some of those machines they use. I wonder who invented them/ Any ideas?

Virtual field trip – The printing of “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa”

Good day, Zebee here. Have you ever wondered what it takes to print a book? When “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” was printed, my boss Joy was there. She took lots of pictures and video clips. She asked me to share them with you and explain the process the best I can. So, here goes. . .

Today we have a slide show for you. This shows the first part of the book printing process.

Did you know that here in Puerto Rico the giant sheets of paper need to be cooled off before they go into the machine? Why? So that the paper is dry and flows smoothly.

“Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” goes on the road!

Good morning, Zebee here. I had a great day. . .hey! what’s this!

This Just In! “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” is now available at the Mayagüez Zoo and coming soon to a school near you! (If you live in Puerto Rico, that is.)

Yes, you read right, the book and activity book are for sale at the zoo.

My boss Joy and her husband Julio have been taking the books on a tour of the island. They have visited a number of schools, and spreading the word that there’s a new book in town ready to add to your 1-3 grade classroom. Schools like what they see and are buying them for next year.

Last week, Joy and Julio sat in on a school convention that involved around 100 schools. In the coming weeks they are participating the a home-schooling annual gathering as well as visits to more schools.

One of the teachers came over to Joy and told her that her students had been at the Caguas Library the day she was there presenting the book with Maria Chuzema. She said they came back talking about how much fun they had and how much they liked the book. Joy was very happy to hear this and came right over to the 'V Zoo' and told all of us.

Good morning everyone in Bloggerville! Zebee here. Well, last week was fun with Jennifer Gladen. We al look forward to her visiting us again when A Star in the Night published.

So, one of the comments left last week by Lori Calabrese tagged us to give 7 random facts about us.

Since several of us wanted to participate, we decided to each give seven random facts.

Here’s mine
1 I like to listen in when humans walk by, never know what you might hear.
2 I think (but don’t let the others know) that zebras are the most beautiful animals in the world.
3 I love to travel the world zoos.
4 I like to play hide and seek.
5 I have a great smile, don’t you think?
6 I wonder what this food humans eat called pizza is like.
7 I don’t like getting wet.

Okay, my turn. Hi I’m Mori.
1 I like the fact that my friends here at the ‘V Zoo’ gave me a surprise party.
2 Even though I’m at the end of the zoo, I get lots of visitors.
3 I can lick my ears with my tongue! Bet you can’t do that.
4 If you could touch me, I’d feel like velvet.
5 I like to play hide and seek too. I guess Zebee and I are good at it because of our stripes.
6 I get scared at night. It’s dark.
7 Zebee wonders what pizza’s like, I wonder about the stuff you call ice cream. Is it good?

Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa news

Hello everyone out there ‘V Zoo’ land. (a corner of Bloggerville) Zebee here playing reporter to bring you up to date on what’s happening with Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa. I have several items to report.

First, last Wednesday, October 29th, my boss Joy, her husband Julio and two of her friends took ZP/FZ to Saint Marco’s Elementary School in Guayama. 72 students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades were treated to a fun time. Starting off with clapping games, the children were involved right away. Joy and the school’s Spanish teacher, Ms. Lydia Nazario, read the book out loud with a room full of attentive students. After a short discussion about the story and what a zookeeper does, the children were treated to coloring pages, crayons, juice, animal cookies and goodie bags.

‘V Zoo’ buzz and special Boo news!

Hi everyone out there, this is Mori. I just want to say Thank you for helping me celebrate my birthday. Wow! I didn’t think anyone noticed me way at the end of the zoo. My boss Joy is having lots of fun promoting the book. She’s going to a school this week to share it with a group of 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. I’m sure she’ll tell us about it when she gets home from it.

Here comes Zebee, Lito and Elvis. I wonder what they have their heads together on now.

Hi guys! What’s going on? You look pretty excited.

Hi Mori, we are. We just found out that at the teaching zoo Rebekha went to they’re having a Boo at the Zoo this Friday.

Where is it Zebee? Can we go?

It’s at the Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. I don’t think we can go, but we can help make sure all the people in the area do. Here’s a link to the page to get the details. I have heard Rebekha talk about it, from when she went there. Sounds like it’s lots of fun. Also, your admission is a can of food!
Oh and that’s the poster up at the top.

Hey Mori, Lito and I want to thank you for having a birthday. Now people all over the world know about us and more are buying the books each day, so more and more people are going to learn about us.

Gee, thank you Elvis and Lito for throwing me the best birthday party ever. Who’s birthday is next? What can we do for them?

I was thinking . . .

Well, looks like we are into another planning session here at the ‘V Zoo’. Got to go and listen in on the plans.

Book Launch and TV interview all in the same day!

Hi everyone, Zebee here. Boy did my boss Joy have a big day yesterday. In the morning she had her book launch party at the library and then in the afternoon the show she taped was on TV. I’ll let her tell you as we listen in while she tells Rebekha all about it.

So, mom, how did the launch party go?

Fantastic! Let’s see, we had about 35 to 40 kids there and about equal amount of adults.

That’s really good. Did any of the press show up?

Not during the event, but one photographer showed up after it was over and took pictures of the books. I think I’m going to write and submit an article with pictures to the other newspapers and see if any of them pick it up.

So, did the kids have fun? Tell me how the whole thing went.

Okay. When they first arrived we gave them coloring pages and a small box of crayons. That kept them busy until the show started. When María Chuzema arrived, she was carrying her bird umbrella and the kids all knew who she was. She immediately went into a story about how the zebra got his stripes. That got the kids settled down. She then introduced the book and we took turns reading, her in Spanish and me in English.

Sounds like she really helped out. Did she do anything else?

Yes. After we finished reading the story and everyone applauded, she put on some music and sang and danced with everyone. We even did the chicken dance!

What did she do next?

This was really funny. She went into a monologue skit with lots of tongue twisters and made up words from her show on TV. The kids got all involved and then she started pulling the parents into it and had them act out the other characters in her one woman skit. It was very funny.

Did you sell any books?

I waited until her show was over and then she had me come to the front of the room where I announced the snacks of juice and animal crackers for the children and showed the parents where they could come and buy the books. I sold 23 sets of the book and activity book as well as 5 of the teacher guides.

Wow! That’s great mom! I really wish I could have been there.

Me too honey, but you can watch this slide show and feel like you were right there.

So, tell me, did the TV interview air today like it was supposed to?

Yes, and much to my surprise, they used all the footage they shot with me. The craft she made that was supposed to be part of the show, didn’t make it in at all.

Do you have a copy of it?

Not yet, but María gave me the name and phone number of the person to call as ask for a copy. When I get it I’ll make a copy and send it off to you.

Thanks mom. It sounds like you had a great day. With all this and the reviews we’re getting we should do well.

I agree. Now, let’s go over to the bongo exhibit. I was thinking. . .

Book Launch tomorrow! Another great book review!

Hello everyone, Zebee here. Well, tomorrow is the big day, we launch the book to the media and then on Friday the book is available for sale! My boss Joy is running around in circles trying to get everything done. For tomorrow, here’s what she’s got planned:

At the Caguas Public Library, La Biblioteca Pública Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos at 10 AM the program starts. TV children show personality, María Chuzema will be reading the book in Spanish and Joy will be reading it in English. There are at least 75 people who are going to be there at last count. We have juice, animals crackers, coloring pages, crayons and goodie bags for all the children. The books will be on sale at a very nice discount. The local TV and newspapers have all been invited, and we are hoping for at least one of each, two would be nice.

Then, if that isn’t enough, that afternoon at 2:30 the TV program she taped with María Chuzema airs. Her plan is to be back home by then so she can watch it with her friends here at the marina where she lives.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day and filled with lots of fun and hopefully book sales.

Now, if all that isn’t enough, yesterday my boss Joy got another really great review. This one is from Ron Magill. He’s the communication and media director for the Miami Metrozoo. He also does regular appearances on the TV show ‘Sábado Gigante’ on Univision. He’s their resident animal expert. He also appears on several other TV shows regularly. Here’s what he had to say about Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa:

“Zooprise Party” is a wonderful children’s book that tells the story of an Okapi who believes that all of his animal friends at the zoo have forgotten his birthday. Author Rebekha Delgado and illustrator Joy Delgado use the story to subtly teach the reader some interesting facts about some unique animals. The best lesson of all for the children who will enjoy this book is that friends come in all shapes, colors, sizes, and backgrounds and that our friends represent some of the most important things in our lives.
