Getting Ready For This Year's Tree Lighting Ceremony

Good morning to you all. Zebee here. To get you in the mood for Christmas this year, this is a picture of the central plaza in Caguas, Puerto Rico last year. Is'nt that one of the prettiest trees you've ever seen?

Okay, as some of you might remember, last year at our tree lighting ceremony we had a few mishaps. Don't remember? You can read about it here. So, to avoid the same problems, my boss Joy has taken a few precautions.

To place the star on the top of the tree, this year we are drawing out of a hat. The paper that has a star on it will get the honors. Next will be a paper with a Christmas tree light on it. That animal will get to turn on the lights. This will avoid the two biggest problems from last year.

Who's on the guest list this year? All of our boss Joy's wiriter friends and a few of the characters from their books. I think it's going to be lots of fun. We've all heard the stories and m=now we're going to get to meet everybody.

It will be a big party this year. Do you want to come? Just drop me a comment and I'll put in a good word for your invitation to my boss Joy.
I hope to see you there. Oh, it's next Tuesday.

See you back here Thursday with another great book to read.

It's December 1st!!!

Good morning everyone! Zebee here. This is just a quick note today. See, my boss Joy has this tradition. December 1st is Christmas decorating day.

We here at the V Zoo all join in the fun. We will help decorate our enclosures. The giraffes will help string lights and garlands at the highest points, Billy and his mom are in charge of the popcorn and cranberry stringing, Elvis is in charge of adding the lights and I am going to somehow put the angel on top of the tree. Want to see her?
Isn't she pretty? My boss Joy made her years ago when Rebekha was a baby.

Anyway, then, after all the decorations are up, we help bake fudge, cookies and sing Christmas carols.

So, what do you do at your home to get ready for the holidays? I'd love to hear from you. Sharing family traditions is fun.

Oh, got to go. Here come Joy, Rebekha, Sally and the rest of the V Zoo keepers. See you Thursday.

Today is Cliché Day!

Hi everyone, Zebee here with the rest of the gang at the V Zoo. Did you have a fun time on Halloween? We did.

Now that Halloween is over, what's next? Let's see...

Mori: Did you know that today is Cliché Day?

Billy: What's a Cliché?

Lito: It's a saying that people use too much so it loses the meaning it originally had.

Mori: My favorite is "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

Billy: Oh, I get it. It's like "he's got ants in his pants" right?

Lito: That's a good one. Does your mom say that about you Billy when you start running all around your exhibit? I like "as easy as pie."

Billy: Ha, ha, ha.

Zebee: I like "kick up your heels" because I like to do that. So, kids out there in Bloggerville, what's your favorite Cliché? Not sure? Hop over to clichesite.com and check it out.

Be sure to drop all of us here at the V Zoo and share your favorite one, okay?

See you Thursday!

Muse Online Writers Conference Wrap Up

Good morning Bloggerville fans. Today, my boss Joy came by and shared some of what she learned at her writers conference. Boy, she sure had fun!

So, one of the things she did was look at a picture and describe every detail in it. We don't have pictures her at the V Zoo, but we can look around us. Here are some of our observations:

Mori: I live at the end of the zoo. But, on the other side of the fence is another world. When I look through the fence I see: trees, lots of trees, birds and bird nests in those trees. There's a stream that runs along the fence at the V Zoo. Sometimes I see fish jumping. I wonder what it would be like to swim like a fish...

Elvis: I look at the sky and dream. I dream about when I can fly free, like when I let everyone out of their exhibits for Mori's birthday party. I see my wife Elvira and baby Elvin, our nest and am glad I'm here.

Lito: I see leaves high up on tree branches. I ike to stand on my hind legs and eat those leaves.

Star: I look over at Zebee and wish I could travel the world zoos like him. Maybe one week he'll take me aong. I see my sisters Honey and Jewel. I think I'm the prettiest, but don't tell them I said that.

Belinda: I see our campsite that the keepers made for us. I love to explore it and see where they've hidden treats for Boris and me. One time they hid honey combs in a hole on the side of a tree, another time they put apples in a bag and hid them inside the tent. It's fun to sniff out food.

Okay, so there you have what a few of us here at the V Zoo see when we really look around. Now it's your turn. What do you see when you look outside your home? Please share, we love hearing from you.

Bye for now, see you Thursday with another book review for all of you.

New Happenings at the V Zoo

Ringo (bongo): Paul, come look at this! What do you think they’re doing back there?

Paul (bongo): I’m not sure. Hey, Adam, can you see what Rebekha, Sally and Joy are doing?

Adam (kudu): Looks like they’re setting up a picnic.

Paul: Why?

Zebee: Hi guys! What’s up? Oh, hi everyone in Bloggerville. Didn’t see you there. So, Ringo, what are you looking at?

Ringo: Our boss Joy, Rebekha and Sally are over there behind the elephant exhibit and we’re trying to figure out what they’re doing.

Zebee: Oh, is that all? They’re …

Billy (chimp): I know, I know! They’re going to make me a new playground. Right?

Zebee: Well, you’re part right. They are planning a new playground, but it’s not for you Billy. Sorry.

Billy: Aw gee, I was hoping…

Ringo: So who is the new playground for Zebee?

Zebee: It’s for the families that come to visit the V Zoo. It’s going to have picnic tables, BBQ pits, a jungle gym, swing set, wading pool, gazebo and lots more.

Adam: Sounds like it’s going to be a fun place for them to spend part of their day at the zoo.

Paul: I’m glad we will have front row seats when it’s open. I like to watch humans, don’t you Adam?

Adam: I like watching the kids. They do some of the funniest things. So, Zebee, when is this playground going to be done?

Zebee: Around the end of the year sometime. I think our boss Joy is planning a special party with some of her cyber buddies like Margot, Donna and Shari.

Billy: Oh goodie! I really like Margot, Donna and Shari. Are they going to bring all their books and have a story party?

Zebee: That’s part of the plan. Oops, I’ve got to go. There’s this special event going on over at, well I”ll tell you more about it on Sunday. Bye for now everyone!

Summer Camp at the V Zoo Plans in Full Swing!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Zebee here.

Many zoos have summer camps. So, my boss Joy and her daughter Rebekha are planning a great virtual summer camp here at the V Zoo. Here they come now. Let’s listen in.

J: I’m really getting excited about our virtual summer camp Rebekha. You and the other zookeepers have been working hard on it to make it a winner.

R: Thanks mom. Sally and Tom have some great ideas. I like the crafts, education segments and of course the story telling time.

J: When do you think you’ll have the schedule finished? I’d like to start advertising soon.

R: In the next few weeks. Since it’s a virtual summer camp we don’t have to do as much preparation as we would at a brick and mortar zoo. This is much easier and I think the families that participate will have a great time.

J: Good. Keep me informed and let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Got to go, I want to take a walk around the V Zoo and see if . . .

Sounds like we’re going to have lots of fun here this summer. I just know you’re going to want to participate. As soon as I know the details, I’ll pass them on.

Bye for now, and be sure to come back Thursday for another great book review.

Oh, and over at Books Go Beyond Reading from June 1 - 12 join us for the “Bounce into Books” book blog tour. It’s going to be lots of fun! More details tomorrow over at Books Go Beyond Reading

We’re getting Meerkats!

Hi everyone, Zebee here. I’m really excited today. My boss Joy has added a new exhibit. An exhibit of Meerkats. Do you know what they are? They are a small mammal, part of the mongoose family.

I think they are a hoot to watch. I just know all our visitors will love them. We’re getting 10 of them. I don’t know their names yet, but since the new exhibit is going to be off a side road between the elephant and white rhino exhibits, I guess Elvis will have to let me out one night so I can go visit.

So, here’s a little bit of information about meerkats.
* They live in the desert of Botswana and South Africa.
* They pal around in groups called “mob”, “gang” or “clan”.
* They live 12-14 years normally.
* Like Lito, they stand on their hind legs a lot.
* They live in burrows underground.
* They are very social animals, they groom each other and lick each others faces.
* They have some that stand watch, like a look out, while the rest forage for food.
Pictures thanks to Wikipedia.

I’ve got to go. I hear Elvis calling me and I want to see when he can let me out so I can go visit with our newest additions.

See you Thursday with a book review about a blue dinosuar.

New Bongo Exhibit

Good morning everyone, Zebee here. There’s Jim and Sally. Let’s see what they’re talking about.

J: Today we’re unveiling the new Bongo exhibit. Are you going to be there?

S: I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I bet Ringo and Paul are going to be really pleased when they get over there.

J: I think Paul is ready to get back out on exhibit, but Ringo likes hiding. I think he’ll like the forest we created in the corner.

S: The guests will like it too because it’s close enough to the fence so they will finally get to see him.

J: I hope that Billy doesn’t cause too much of a fuss next door. He won’t be getting as much attention today.

S: Rebekha’s over there today. She’s got something special planned for him to keep him very busy. Something about teaching him to draw. That should be fun.

J: It’s almost time to open, we’d better get going. See you at the unveiling.

S: Bye Jim, see you later.

Sounds like there’s going to be lots of fun over on the other side of the zoo. I’m glad Billy will be busy so he doesn’t steal the show.

See you Thursday with another great book review.

‘V Zoo’ happenings: Summer Camp

Good morning everyone in Bloggerville. Zebee here with some exciting news! My boss Joy, Rebekha and Sally are thinking about having a summer camp here! Think about that. A summer camp at the ‘V Zoo.’ Mori, Lito, Elvis and the rest of the gang here are all talking about it.

Oh look! Here come Rebekha and Sally. Let’s listen in and see if they talk about some of the plans. See you at the end.

R: I think a summer camp will be lots of fun, don’t you Sally?

S: Yes, I went to one when I was younger and had a blast.

R: What types of things did you do?

S: Well, when I was 6 we did things like look at bugs and learned all about them. We even got to hold some of them, the non poisonous ones. We did lots of crafts, all animals related. My mom still has some of them I think.

R: Sounds like fun. I think my mom is planning one day and week long camps for different age groups.

S: That’s what I heard. I know each group will have some type of encounter with our educational animals. They also will get some ‘behind the scenes tour’ and get to help fix diets and learn how we feed each of the animals. Of course there will be lots of crafts.

R: Let’s go over to mom’s office and see what she has in mind for us to do during summer camp.

S: I bet Jim will get to take the older kids to the . . .

Wow! It sure sounds like this summer is going to be fun here. Now I need to spread the word. See you back here Thursday with another great book review.

The lighting of the Christmas tree at the ‘V Zoo’

Boy! Did we have a great Christmas lighting party. Everyone came. Margot Finke was here as were Donna Shepherd, Jennifer Gladen, Kevin Collier, Barbara Techel, Kim Chatel, Sue Thurman, Shari Lyel-Soffe, Dianne Sagan and Lanaia Lee. My boss Joy got us a beautiful tree and along with all her friends and zookeepers, they decorated the tree.

But, as this is a zoo, animals do unpredictable things. First Billy got into the act. He wanted to put the star on top of the tree. Well, Star thought she should, after all it is her name. Star had it in her mouth ready to place it when Billy climbed up her neck, grabbed it and took off. He almost knocked the tree down in the process. It took Jabira to stop him. Ever since Billy woke him up that night by jumping on him in his exhibit, Billy’s been afraid he’ll do something to him. So, when he approached Billy, Billy dropped the star and slinked away back to his mother.
When that was all settled, then Fred and Elvis started arguing about who should turn on the lights. Well, I guess you could say it was a total ZOO!

Thanks for all who came and for those who read and follow our, um, my blog.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas! See you Sunday with more zoo news from around the world. I’m taking Christmas day off.

Book Review: What do you do with a kangaroo? By Mercer Mayer

Hello everyone, Zebee here. Okay, here is the book review I promised two weeks ago. This was my boss Joy’s favorite book to read to Rebekha and her brother Daniel when they were young.

* * * * * * * * * *

What do you do with a kangaroo? by Mercer Mayer
Published by: Scholastic
ISBN 10: 0-590-44850-1

Review by: Joy Delgado
One of my favorite children books, What do you do with a kangaroo? takes you on a journey into the imagination of a little girl. She goes through her whole day imagining what she would do if first a kangaroo jumps in her bedroom window, well let me quote:

What do you do with a Kangaroo
who jumps in your window, sits on your bed,
and says,
“I never sleep on wrinkled sheets,
so change them now and make them smooth,
and fluff up the pillow if you please.”

What do you do?

You throw him out, that’s what you do.
“Get out of my bed you Kangaroo!”

The story goes on with encounters of the oddest sorts. She meets an opossum, a llama, a raccoon, a moose, a tiger and a camel. What does she do? Throws them out, but they all come back at the end of the day. She what she does in the end when they all want to sleep in her bed.

The illustrations are by Mercer Mayer and they are spectacular. These pictures are rich and full of detail and really bring the story to life.

I highly recommend searching for and acquiring a copy of this book and letting your imagination sore. First copyrighted in 1973, it is still around today.

* * * * * * * * * *

My boss Joy brought it by the ‘V Zoo’ a while back and read it to all of us. And here’s what some of us had to say about it:

Jewel the giraffe: “What a fun story. I like the llama the best.”

Lito the gerenuk: “That little girl has guts. I don’t know what I’d do if I encountered a tiger, no offense Simon.”

Simon the tiger: “No offense taken Lito. I wonder what it’s like riding a tricycle.”

Billy the chimp: “I know what I’d do if I were in the story. I’d hang from the ceiling fan and spin around until I got dizzy then I’d jump down and run all over the house. Can I mom, huh?”

Brindi, Billy’s mom: “No Billy, but you can swing from the ropes here today and pretend, okay?”

Billy: “Okay, if that’s all I can do.”

Personally I liked the story, but one thing was missing. A zebra!
Until Sunday, stay safe and dry, my boss Joy is STILL getting lots of rain.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Very Wet Tuesday to you!

Star, have you heard about all the rain our boss Joy is having? Oh, hi everyone, Zebee here.

No. What’s rain?

It’s water that falls out of the clouds in the sky. When it rains the ground and everything that’s outside gets wet.

I’m glad it doesn’t rain here at the ‘V Zoo’. I don’t like getting wet. Sometimes birds come in to take a drink from our drinking pool and end up splashing all of us. I get cold.

Well, there has been so much rain there that I heard the news people on TV say it’s the most rain the island has had in between 100 and 200 years!

Wow! I guess that’s a lot of rain then.

Yes, some areas have had over 30 inches of rain. That’s about up to your knee there.

Now I’m really glad I live here. What’s TV?

That’s a, oh, I’ll tell you about it in a minute.

I hope all you people out there in Bloggerville are staying dry and warm like we are here at the ‘V Zoo’. Bye for now. See you Thursday.

Okay Star, a TV is a box that. . .

Tuesday 'V Zoo' happenings

Hi everyone. Lito here standing in for Zebee. He's off on assignment and asked me to fill in today. I've been running around listening in on all kinds of conversations today to bring you some news from the 'V Zoo'. So let's see. . .

Elvin is learning to fly on his own and Elvis and Elvira are very proud parents. He's so cute and it's really funny to watch him try to fly. This morning he flew straight into Elvis while he was eating breakfast!

Jewel, Honey and Star are still amazed that Haina the tigress wants to be their friend. I hear them talking to each other at night sometimes.

Boris and Belinda sure are enjoying the addition to their exhibit. Boris tries to climb the trees to get at the treats the keepers put up there and Belinda enjoys the picnic area. I think the keepers have just as much fun as they do, hiding the treats that is.

Billy is still getting into trouble. Brindi said his latest trick is to try and swing high enought that he can get over the fence. I heard Rebekha and Sally say that they are considering putting a 'ceiling' on the chimp exhibit to keep Billy in.

I guess that's all for today. I think I'll be back on Thursday with a book review that was my boss Joy's favorite book to read to her children when they were growing up. See you then!

Tuesday at the ‘V Zoo’ the bears get new digs!

Good evening everyone in Bloggerville. I know I usually get this out in the morning, but lots is happening and I wanted to be able to tell you the very latest. We are adding to our bear exhibit and I just know the bears are going to have fun with the plans. Let’s listen in as Rebekha and Sally talk about what’s going on.

“Sally, have you heard about the new bear exhibit?”

“Yes Rebekha. I think that Boris and Belinda are really going to enjoy their new digs.”

“I like the campsite idea. Can you imagine the fun we are going to have hiding treats there? I want to hang some from the trees in net bags. What other types of enrichment ideas can we do?”

“I think we can put their food in the trash cans so they can knock them over and forage. The tent area brings back some childhood memories for me. I remember when we went camping in Yosemite, the bears walked through the campground at night. I was scared, but the bears never bothered us. We just saw their shadows as they walked past. I bet there are many other visitors who will remember things like that too.”

“Sounds like you had some interesting camping experiences as a child. What is the next area that is getting a face lift? I think I heard it was the bongo exhibit. Did you hear that too?”

“Yes, but I don’t think there are any definite plans as to what the changes are going to be. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with.”

“Let’s walk over to the bongo exhibit. I have some ideas. I was thinking that we could. . .”

Sounds like Rebekha has a plan. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what our boss Joy has to say.

Well, it’s time for me to go to sleep. I’ll be back on Thursday with another great book review. Sleep well!

Zebee out.

Tiger Walk !?!

Zebee here. It’s early here at the ‘V Zoo’ and everyone is sleeping. I should be too after the night we had here.

When Elvis was doing his rounds last night, it was Hania the tigresses turn. See, Elvis doesn’t get out much these days. He’s taking turns on parent duty with Elvin. Anyway, Hania is a very gentle tigress, but she is still after all a tiger.

So, Elvis lets her out and she decides she wants to take a stroll around the zoo. She sets off in the direction of the Petting Zoo. Mind you, all the goats and sheep in there are sleeping, well, at first. One of them, Suzie, wakes up, sees Hania and starts bleating. LOUD! She wakes up the whole zoo.

Haina paid no attention. Elvis on the other hand is begging Hania to go back to her exhibit. She tells him in no uncertain terms that she is going to walk around the zoo since she has never been able to do it before. What can Elvis do? He’s no match for her if she decides to get nasty, so he just flies along side her.

Okay, she walks past the Petting zoo and goes over to the giraffe exhibit. She tells Elvis that she’s always been fascinated by giraffes and wants to meet Honey, Star and Jewel. Elvis doesn’t want to upset Hania, so he goes in and gets the giraffes. Needless to say, the trio is scared.

When Honey, who is the bravest of the three, came over to the fence, Hania told her how beautiful she thought giraffes are and would like to be friends. Honey ran back and told the others, who then came to the fence and the four of them had a nice chat.

By the time they were done, Elvira was calling Elvis to come home, so, he convinced Hania to go back to her exhibit.

Well, I think this event showed lots of us here at the zoo that just because a particular species of animal has a reputation for being fierce and scary, they can be gentle and a great friend.

That’s all for today, I’m going home and back to get some sleep. See you Thursday.
